From: Madaba-Manja, Jordan
Address: Madaba-Manja, JORDAN 16188

Ryuji Yamaguchi graduated from Harvard University in 2003 with an A.B. in East Asian Studies. Ryuji began dancing at Deerfield Academy in 1997 upon the recommendation of his coach to improve his wrestling skills. With a previous background in classical music, martial arts, and street performance through juggling, he also developed a passion for choreography. Ryuji created twelve dances and invited over 40 untrained male students and faculty to dance during his time at Deerfield.

At Harvard, Ryuji choreographed more than 15 works including "Findings" and a solo, "Self-Portrait," which were selected to be performed in the American College Dance Festival Gala Concert in 2001 and 2002, respectively. He was also a choreographer for "Against the Grain" (2001) and "Titus Andronicus" (2001) on the Loeb Mainstage in Cambridge, MA, and a co-director for the multimedia dance production "Ex-Rated" (2002) in the Loeb Experimental Theater, also in Cambridge, MA.

Ryuji has performed in works by such artists as Mark Morris, Douglas Dunn, Yoshiko Chuma, Kraig "bopi" Patterson, Jennifer Monson, Brenda Divelbliss, and Gianni Di Marco. He was a scholarship student at the American Dance Festival in 2003, where he assisted Eiko & Koma in creating their world premiere "Tree Song." He is the 2003 recipient of the Emerging Artist Grant from LEF Foundation and Green Street Studios (Cambridge, MA), and was a guest artist for Hot Head Works 2003 World Session, a multimedia arts festival in Yokohama, Japan. Ryuji was the 2004-2005 recipient of a space and production grant from P.S.122 (New York, NY) as part of their New Stuff program. His dance activities have spanned the United States, Japan, Ecuador, Romania, and Jordan.

Ryuji is now the Director of Residential Life, Head of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, and establishing the dance program at a newly founded boarding school in Jordan, King's Academy (www.kingsacademy.edu.jo)
